Why visit Bahrain

Pearl of the Gulf

Bahrain has been a crossroads of civilisation for more than four thousand years, and the evidence is everywhere. The ancient burial mounds of Dilmun scatter across the interior, the UNESCO-listed Qal'at al-Bahrain fort rises from reclaimed seafront land, and the souqs of Muharraq overflow with gold, spices and hand-woven cloth. Sandwiched between Saudi Arabia and Qatar in the shallow turquoise waters of the Gulf, this archipelago of thirty-three islands punches far above its size in history, heritage and hospitality.

A City That Never Sleeps

Manama is a city of dramatic contrasts, where a gleaming financial district of mirrored towers stands minutes from the narrow alleyways of the old souk. The Bahrain National Museum charts the island's remarkable story from Dilmun traders to pearl divers, while the extravagant Al-Fateh Grand Mosque welcomes visitors of all backgrounds. At night the Adliya district comes alive with restaurants, galleries and street cafes spilling onto palm-lined pavements, offering everything from slow-cooked machboos to contemporary mezze.

Speed, Sand and Sea

Each spring the Bahrain International Circuit hosts one of the Formula 1 season's most atmospheric races, the floodlit night race drawing visitors from across the region. Beyond the roar of engines there is a quieter Bahrain waiting to be explored: kitesurfing off the northern coast, kayaking through the mangroves of Tubli Bay, and fossil-hunting on the rugged limestone plateau of Jebel Dukhan. The Tree of Life, a four-hundred-year-old mesquite that somehow flourishes alone in the desert with no apparent water source, remains one of the Gulf's most quietly astonishing sights.

Craftsmanship and Culture

Bahrain's artisan traditions run deep. The pottery village of A'ali has been producing distinctive ceramic wares for centuries, and the dhow builders of Muharraq still shape wooden hulls by hand using techniques passed down through generations. The island's pearl diving heritage, inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list, is celebrated at Hawar Islands and along the historic Pearling Path, a walking trail through Muharraq's restored merchant houses that tells the story of an industry that once made Bahrain the envy of the Gulf.
