Why visit Barbados

An Island Carved from Coral

Barbados rises from the Atlantic Ocean as the most easterly island in the Caribbean, a place where the turquoise shallows of the west coast give way to wild cliffs lashed by Atlantic spray on the east. Unlike its volcanic neighbours, this island was shaped entirely by coral limestone, giving it a gently undulating landscape of rolling hills, underground caves and beaches tinged with pink. From the chattel houses dotting the countryside to the rum shops on every corner, Barbados blends centuries of history with an unmistakably relaxed Caribbean rhythm.

Where Flying Fish Meet Fine Dining

Bajan cuisine punches well above the island's tiny weight class. The national dish of cou cou and flying fish remains a beloved staple, and the Saturday morning fish fry at Oistins is practically a national institution. Street vendors serve up cutters stuffed with salt bread and fishcakes alongside restaurants of the highest calibre that draw on the island's sugarcane heritage and the bounty of surrounding waters. Mount Gay, founded in 1703 and often cited as the oldest commercial rum distillery in the world, anchors a rum culture that permeates everything from cocktails to cake.

Rhythms, Crop Over and Rihanna

Barbados gave the world Rihanna and takes its musical legacy seriously. The annual Crop Over festival, which evolved from colonial era sugarcane harvest celebrations, transforms the island each summer with calypso competitions, soca music and elaborately costumed kadooment bands. Beyond the festival season, tuk bands keep alive a uniquely Bajan tradition that blends African rhythms with British military marching music. Cricket is less a sport and more a national obsession, with the Kensington Oval serving as a cathedral of the game.

Coral Reefs and Harrison's Cave

The calm waters off the west coast shelter some of the most accessible coral reefs in the Caribbean, where hawksbill turtles glide through shoals of tropical fish. Inland, Harrison's Cave offers an underground wonderland of stalactites and flowing streams, while the rugged east coast around Bathsheba draws surfers to its powerful Atlantic swells. Barbados packs a remarkable amount of natural variety into its 430 square kilometres, from the mahogany woodland of Turner's Hall to the wildflower meadows of the Scotland District.
