Why visit Cape Verde

Volcanic Islands, Ocean Soul

Cape Verde floats in the Atlantic roughly 570 kilometres off the West African coast, a crescent of ten volcanic islands and several islets that punch well above their weight in personality. From the lush green valleys of Santo Antão to the bone dry dunes of Boa Vista, each island has carved out its own identity through centuries of oceanic isolation. The trade winds keep things comfortably warm year round, with temperatures rarely straying far from the mid twenties. It is one of those places where island time is not just a saying but a way of life.

Rhythms of Morna and Morabeza

The islands gave the world morna, a musical genre of longing and love that earned UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage status in 2019. Cesária Évora, the legendary barefoot diva from Mindelo, carried its melancholy melodies to international stages and left an indelible mark on world music. Beyond the music, Cape Verdeans talk about morabeza: a spirit of warmth and hospitality that seems woven into the very fabric of daily life. Carnival season brings colour, drumming and dancing to the streets, particularly in Mindelo, where the celebrations rival those of far larger cities.

Salt, Sand and Summit

Landscapes here shift dramatically between islands. Fogo's towering volcanic peak, Pico do Fogo, rises to nearly 2,830 metres and still rumbles with occasional eruptions, while vineyards cling to its fertile lower slopes producing wine found nowhere else. Sal and Boa Vista draw sun seekers with endless stretches of golden sand and turquoise waters that are increasingly popular for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Santiago, the largest and most populated island, offers a different mood entirely, with fortress ruins, vibrant markets and the frenetic energy of Praia, the capital.

Crossroads of Continents

Sitting at the junction of Atlantic trade routes, Cape Verde has long been shaped by the meeting of African, European and Brazilian influences. The local cuisine blends these traditions in dishes like cachupa, a hearty slow cooked stew of corn, beans and whatever fish or meat is on hand. Portuguese is the official language, but it is Kriolu, the Cape Verdean Creole, that carries the rhythm of everyday conversation across all ten islands. Whether you arrive chasing waves, tracing music history or simply looking for somewhere the sun reliably shines, the archipelago has a habit of holding on to visitors longer than they planned.
