Santo Domingo holds the distinction of being the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the Americas, and the cobblestoned Zona Colonial still hums with five centuries of layered history. But the Dominican Republic is far more than its capital. Beyond the Resort Gates

Punta Cana's coconut palm coastline draws millions of visitors every year, and for good reason. But venture beyond the poolside and you will find a country of roadside colmados blasting bachata, mountain villages where coffee cherries dry on rooftops, and fishing towns where the catch arrives by wooden yola. The north coast around Cabarete has become one of the world's great kitesurfing destinations, while the Samaná Peninsula offers humpback whale watching each winter.

Plates, Beats and Carnival

Dominican food is built on la bandera: rice, beans and meat, served in countless variations. Mangú (mashed plantain) fuels the morning, sancocho (a hearty stew) anchors celebrations, and fresh tropical juices appear at practically every meal. Music is never far away. Merengue and bachata were both born here, and the February Carnival, with its diablo cojuelo masks and vibrant street parades, is one of the most exuberant in the Caribbean.

Sun, Salt and Something Unexpected

With more than 1,600 kilometres of coastline, the Dominican Republic rarely disappoints sun seekers. Yet some of the most memorable moments happen inland: rafting the Yaque del Norte, hiking to the Caribbean's highest peak at Pico Duarte, or plunging into the turquoise pools of the 27 Charcos de Damajagua. Whether you come for the beach or stumble upon the mountains, this country has a talent for exceeding expectations.
