Cycle, Sail and Slow Down

Few places in Europe reward slow travel quite like Åland. The islands are laced with well-marked cycling routes that wind past red wooden farmhouses, sandy coves and apple orchards heavy with fruit. Island hopping is made easy by a network of free road ferries that connect the larger islands, while the small archipelago ferries venture further out to quieter isles where the seabirds outnumber the people. Sailing is practically a religion here, and the tall ships that make for Mariehamn harbour each summer are a spectacle worth planning a trip around.

A Capital with Character

Mariehamn, one of the smallest capitals in the world, punches well above its weight for charm. Two harbours, a tree-lined main street called Torggatan, the celebrated Pommern sailing ship museum and a clutch of excellent restaurants serving locally caught seafood make the town a genuinely rewarding base. The Åland Maritime Museum tells the story of a community whose identity has always been shaped by the sea, while the summer market and the cycling culture give the whole place a friendly, unhurried energy that lingers long after you have sailed away.
