Gustavia: Harbour Town with Swedish Roots

The capital Gustavia wraps around one of the finest natural harbours in the Lesser Antilles, its sheltered anchorage ringed by colourful boutiques, open-air bistros and the remnants of eighteenth-century Swedish fortifications. France reclaimed the island from Sweden in 1878, but the Swedish legacy lives on in street names, in the distinctive red-and-yellow arms still flown at the mairie, and in the name of the town itself, honouring King Gustav III.

Saint Barthélemy counts more than twenty beaches around its coastline, each with its own character. Saline and Gouverneur draw those who want long crescent bays backed by salt ponds and hills, while Shell Beach in Gustavia is carpeted in fragments of sea shell rather than sand. Flamands opens onto wide flat shallows perfect for wading, and St Jean pairs a busy strip of cafés with reliable waves that attract windsurfers and kitesurfers year-round.

French Flavour in Every Detail

As a French overseas collectivity, Saint Barthélemy brings a distinctly Gallic sensibility to the Caribbean. Markets brim with cheeses, charcuterie and fresh baguettes, restaurants plate up classical French technique alongside fresh local seafood, and the pharmacies and patisseries of Gustavia could have been lifted straight from a Parisian arrondissement. It is a combination that makes the island feel like a very warm corner of France that simply forgot to return to Europe.
