Aruba

Aruba is an autonomous country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, a dry southern Caribbean island just north of Venezuela. Its wind-shaped landscape, bright beaches and layered island culture make it distinct from the wetter volcanic islands farther north. Oranjestad is the capital and the principal urban centre, while the interior is marked by cactus scrub, limestone, natural pools and protected landscapes.

Visitors divide time between Eagle Beach, Baby Beach and the calmer coves of the south coast, with sailing, snorkelling and diving available around the island. Arikok National Park brings together desert-like terrain, caves, coastal cliffs and the island’s highest ground. Oranjestad’s pastel buildings, market streets and museums provide a counterpoint to the resort belt, and local food reflects Papiamento, Dutch, Latin American and wider Caribbean influences.

Aruba’s story includes Caquetío Indigenous heritage, Spanish and Dutch colonial rule, African and other migrant communities, and the economic changes brought by gold, oil and tourism. Papiamento and Dutch are official languages, while Spanish and English are widely used. The island’s music, carnival, foodways and family networks show how these histories have combined without becoming a single uniform culture.

Queen Beatrix International Airport is the main gateway, with direct links to North America, Latin America, Europe and neighbouring islands. Most visitor accommodation is concentrated along the western and southern coasts, while roads make the island practical to explore by hire car or organised excursion. The climate is relatively dry and windy, and the island’s compact scale makes it possible to combine beaches, parks and town visits in one stay.
