Why visit Sint Maarten

Sint Maarten is an autonomous country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, occupying the southern part of an island shared with the French collectivity of Saint-Martin. Philipsburg is the capital, and the island combines steep green hills, busy bays, beaches and a highly international population within a compact area.

The boardwalk and Front Street in Philipsburg sit beside Great Bay, while Maho, Simpson Bay, Dawn Beach and the west-coast coves offer different coastal settings. Sailing, diving, food markets, museums and viewpoints add variety beyond the beaches. The island’s airport and cruise harbour also make it a base for regional travel, although the French side has its own towns, roads and visitor culture.

Sint Maarten’s history includes Indigenous Caribbean peoples, European rivalry, plantation and slave economies, migration and the continuing relationship between the Dutch and French sides. Dutch and English are official languages, while many residents also use Caribbean Creole, French, Spanish or other community languages. Food, carnival, music and religious traditions reflect the island’s movement between cultures and regions.

Princess Juliana International Airport is the main air gateway and the cruise port brings additional day visitors. Accommodation ranges from hotels and resorts to guesthouses, villas and apartments, with the busiest services around Philipsburg, Simpson Bay and the airport corridor. Roads connect the Dutch side efficiently, but traffic, weather and the borderless crossing to the French side can affect travel times.
