Why visit Mayotte

A Volcanic Archipelago in the Mozambique Channel

Mayotte is a French overseas department sitting between Madagascar and the Mozambican coast, formed from two main islands and a scattering of islets encircled by one of the world's largest lagoons. The volcanic peaks of Grande-Terre rise steeply from the water, draped in tropical forest and ringed by white-sand beaches that dissolve into a turquoise expanse stretching nearly 1,100 square kilometres.

Coral Reefs and Marine Life

The protected lagoon shelters a double barrier reef system in exceptional health, making it a prized destination for divers and snorkellers. Humpback whales arrive each year between June and September to calve in the warm waters, while hawksbill turtles nest on the beaches of Petite-Terre. The marine reserve around the southern tip of Grande-Terre protects seahorses, grouper, and manta rays in equal measure.

Comorian and Malagasy Heritage

Mayotte's cultural identity is woven from Comorian, Malagasy, and French threads. Shimaore and Kibushi are spoken across the villages alongside French, and the rhythms of twarab music float from roadside stalls and ceremonial gatherings. The island's cuisine reflects this layered heritage, with coconut-rich curries, grilled fish, and the slow-cooked stews of East African tradition served on banana leaf or enamel plate.

Mamoudzou and the Island Interior

The capital Mamoudzou spills across the hillsides of Grande-Terre, its market stalls piled with ylang-ylang, vanilla, and freshly caught fish from the lagoon. A short ferry ride across to Petite-Terre reaches Dzaoudzi, the former colonial capital, with its narrow streets and panoramic views over the water. Inland, forest trails climb through lemur habitat and past ylang-ylang plantations to volcanic ridgelines with sweeping views across the channel.
