The Old Town is a delight of cobbled lanes, azulejo-tiled facades and restaurants serving black scabbardfish with fried banana and rich espetada skewers. Madeira wine, produced in styles from dry sercial to sweet malmsey, is among the world's most distinctive fortified wines and central to any visit. The city's covered market, the Mercado dos Lavradores, bursts with tropical flowers, exotic fruits and the energy of daily island life.

Year-Round Adventure from Sea to Summit

Madeira's dramatic topography makes it a compelling destination for outdoor enthusiasts at any time of year. Canyoning in the ravines above Ribeira Brava, paragliding from the heights above Funchal, dolphin and whale watching in the surrounding Macaronesian waters, and sea swimming at the natural lava pools of Porto Moniz are just a few of the adventures on offer. The Carnival celebrations in February and the Flower Festival in spring bring a festive energy to the streets, while the New Year fireworks over Funchal harbour draw visitors from across the world.
