Why visit the Seychelles

Granite Giants and Turquoise Dreams

The Seychelles archipelago rises from the Indian Ocean like a scattering of emerald jewels set against impossibly blue water. Unlike most tropical island nations, many of these 115 islands sit atop ancient granite foundations, making them some of the oldest ocean islands on Earth. Mahé, Praslin and La Digue form the heart of the archipelago, each offering a distinct character from cloud forest peaks to powder white beaches framed by enormous, wave smoothed boulders. The signature granite formations of Anse Source d'Argent on La Digue have graced so many postcards that arriving there in person can feel like stepping into a photograph.

A Pantry Shaped by the World

Seychellois cuisine tells the story of every culture that has touched these shores. Creole cooking draws on French technique, Indian spice, Chinese wok craft and the bounty of the surrounding ocean to produce dishes that are vibrant and layered. Freshly caught red snapper might arrive in a fragrant coconut curry alongside breadfruit chips, while a ladob of ripe plantain simmered in coconut milk and nutmeg makes for a comforting dessert. Street stalls and family run restaurants often offer the most memorable meals, and the weekly market in Victoria is a riot of tropical fruit, cinnamon bark and vanilla pods grown on local plantations.

Where the Forest Meets the Reef

Conservation is woven into daily life across the Seychelles. The Vallée de Mai on Praslin, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, shelters the legendary coco de mer palm and its enormous double lobed nut, the largest seed in the plant kingdom. Aldabra Atoll, the world's second largest coral atoll, is home to roughly 100,000 giant tortoises and remains one of the few places on Earth where such creatures roam in vast numbers. Snorkelling and diving reveal coral gardens teeming with hawksbill turtles, whale sharks and clouds of tropical fish, while hiking trails through the Morne Seychellois National Park on Mahé wind through misty montane forest alive with rare endemic birds.

Island Time, Perfected

Getting around the Seychelles is part of the experience. Ferries and light aircraft connect the inner islands, and on La Digue bicycles remain a favoured mode of transport. Victoria, the capital, is one of the smallest capital cities in the world, where a morning's wander takes in a miniature clock tower modelled on London's Vauxhall Bridge original, the bustling Victoria Market and a scattering of colonial era buildings. The pace of life here is famously gentle, and the warmth of Seychellois hospitality makes even a brief visit feel like a proper homecoming.
