Britain's foothold on Cyprus

Akrotiri and Dhekelia are the UK's Sovereign Base Areas on Cyprus, two patches of British sovereign territory that have sat within the island's landscape since independence in 1960. Split between the Western Base Area near Limassol and the Eastern Base Area near Larnaca, they exist primarily as active military installations, home to RAF Akrotiri, British Forces Cyprus headquarters, and the Episkopi Cantonment. What makes them unusual is how seamlessly they blend into the surrounding island: no border crossings, no passport checks, and everyday life that flows across the boundaries without drama.

Flamingos, salt flats and open skies

The Akrotiri Salt Lake is the standout natural draw. Each winter it hosts thousands of greater flamingos, along with migrating waders and raptors passing through the eastern Mediterranean flyway, making the peninsula a quiet favourite among birdwatchers. In summer the lake dries to a pale crust and the surrounding scrub takes on a bleached, windswept character. The peninsula also hosts the Lady's Mile beach, a long stretch of shingle and sand that draws locals and visitors from nearby Limassol. Aside from the designated restricted zones around the base perimeters, most of the landscape is freely accessible and pleasantly quiet.

A very British slice of the Mediterranean

Venture into the base villages and the contrast is quietly amusing: a chippie and an Indian restaurant in Akrotiri village, BFBS radio playing on a terrace, and squaddies in shorts queuing for a Sunday roast. The Dhekelia area near Larnaca has a similar feel, with the Eastern Sovereign Base Area spilling out towards the coast. Both areas use the euro rather than sterling, a legacy of Cyprus joining the eurozone in 2008, and both drive on the left. It is an oddly comfortable collision of British military routine and hot Mediterranean daily life.

Getting there and getting around

The base areas are reached via Cyprus. Larnaca International Airport is the closest gateway for Dhekelia and Ayios Nikolaos, while Paphos Airport gives access via the A1 motorway to Akrotiri and Episkopi. Local buses connect Limassol to Akrotiri village and Larnaca to Dhekelia, so a visit on a day out from either city is perfectly manageable. Respect signage around restricted military areas, do not photograph installations, and the rest of the territory is yours to explore at your own pace.
