Where the World Ends in White

Stretching from the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula to the South Pole, the British Antarctic Territory is one of the most remote and spectacular places on Earth. Over 99% of it is buried beneath a permanent ice sheet, yet the narrow ice-free margins teem with life — raucous penguin rookeries, hauled-out Weddell seals, and vast seabird colonies that have never learned to fear humans.

Expedition Cruising and Polar Heritage

The territory is accessible by expedition cruise ship, with landings at historic sites including Port Lockroy — a restored wartime base that doubles as the world's most southerly post office. Visitors can step into the huts used by early 20th-century explorers, surrounded by a thriving gentoo penguin colony that has made the base its home.

Wildlife on an Extraordinary Scale

Seven species of penguin breed in the territory alongside six seal species and extraordinary concentrations of seabirds including albatrosses and petrels. The waters surrounding the Antarctic Peninsula are among the most productive on the planet, feeding humpback and minke whales that come to feed in the austral summer season.
