New Mexico earns its nickname without argument. Terracotta mesas glow amber at dusk, ancient pueblos rise from the desert floor and the sky puts on a colour show that painters have been chasing for over a century. This is a place where geology, Indigenous heritage and Spanish colonial history layer on top of each other in a way you simply cannot find anywhere else in North America.
The state capital sits at 2,100 metres and punches well above its modest size when it comes to culture. Canyon Road is lined with more than 80 galleries, the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum draws visitors from across the globe and the Palace of the Governors on the historic plaza has been in continuous use since 1610, making it the oldest public building in the United States. The food scene is just as serious, built around green and red chilli that locals treat as a matter of fierce civic identity.
White Sands National Park offers something genuinely otherworldly: 710 square kilometres of gypsum sand dunes so pale they reflect the moonlight. Carlsbad Caverns descends into a subterranean world of stalactites and the nightly bat flight is one of the great free spectacles in American nature. The state is also a haven for stargazers, with designated dark sky areas that make the Milky Way look close enough to touch on a clear night.
New Mexico is home to 23 federally recognised tribes and pueblos, and their cultures are alive and visible rather than preserved behind glass. Taos Pueblo has been continuously inhabited for over a thousand years and remains a living community. The International Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque every October fills the sky with hundreds of balloons at dawn and is among the most photographed events anywhere in the world.
