Why visit Vermont

Autumn on Fire

Vermont earns its fame every October when the hillsides ignite in a carnival of red, orange and gold. The Green Mountain State is one of the most spectacular places on Earth to witness the annual leaf change, drawing visitors along winding back roads where sugar maples put on a show that no filter could improve. Pack a thermos of locally roasted coffee, point the car at a covered bridge and let the scenery do the work.

Snow, Slopes and Small Mountains

When the trees go bare, the ski resorts wake up. Stowe, Killington and Mad River Glen are institutions of the American ski scene, offering everything from groomed cruisers to terrain that will make an expert think twice. Vermont snow is famously dry and plentiful, and the apreski scene in the valley villages is warm, unhurried and genuinely local. Cross country trails and snowshoe routes lace the state for those who prefer their winter at a quieter pace.

Farms, Cheese and Very Good Maple Syrup

Vermont produces more maple syrup per capita than anywhere else in the United States, and the dairy culture is equally serious. Farmstead cheddar, creamy cheeseboards and hand churned butter fill the shelves of general stores in villages barely large enough to have a post office. The food scene in Burlington punches well above its weight, built around seasonally driven menus and a genuine commitment to the farms visible from the restaurant windows.

Village Life and Genuine Quiet

Vermont has no city large enough to crowd out its essential character. Montpelier is the smallest state capital in the country and proud of it, a walkable grid of independent bookshops, good coffee and civic energy. The rest of the state is a loose arrangement of college towns, craft brewery hamlets and working farms where the pace of life moves with the seasons. Visitors who slow down to match it tend to find something they were not expecting: genuine stillness.
